DIY: oreo peppermint truffles.

Happy Belated NEW YEAR everyone!

One thing I love besides anything green is food….especially chocolate, and I have finally been blessed with the gift of free time. So I’ve been venturing out and learning how to cook/bake different things that I’ve always wanted to learn how to make. And over my winter break, I learned how to make oreo peppermint truffles from a friend (Thanks Sunny!).

The process was actually easier than I thought and the ingredients and steps are extremely basic.
I’ll just jump right into it.

You are going to need 4 ingredients: 1. a pack of Oreos,  2. Baker’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate, 3. a block of cream cheese 4. peppermint.

Step 1: Take a big plastic/metal bowl and dump about 1/2 of the Oreos from the packet into it. (I used a plastic bowl).
Step 2: Take a crushing tool and crush the Oreos until it becomes a powdery consistency. (I had to improvise and use a heavy beer glass to crush the Oreos because of my lack of cooking utensils). Set aside some of the crushed Oreos in a separate bowl to use as the topping for the truffles.
Step 3: Take another bowl and crush peppermints in a smaller bowl. (Same idea, use a heavy glass or a crushing tool…this part might be a little messy…crushing peppermints is harder than it sounds.)

At this point things should look a little like this…..

Step 4: Put half of the block of cream cheese into the bowl of Oreos. This will be the inside of your truffle.
Step 5: Use a big spoon or a spatula to mix the crushed Oreos and cream cheese until mixture becomes a doughy consistency. Make sure all the cream cheese has been mixed into the Oreo. If the doughy consistency doesn’t come out too well (not enough cream cheese/too much Oreo) add a little more cream cheese.
Step 6: Roll out little balls of this mixture onto a baking sheet/pan until you use up all of your mixture.

Here’s what steps 4-6 should look like…..

Step 7: Take half of the Baker’s Semi-Sweet chocolate and place them into a bowl.
Step 8: Melt the bowl of Baker’s Semi-Sweet chocolate for about 45 seconds. Take it out to see how much the chocolate has melted and melt it until it becomes complete liquid. (Be careful not to microwave the chocolate for too long…it can burn and will harden. The secret is to microwave the chocolate a few seconds at a time until you get the liquid.)
Step 9: Take two forks and roll the balls you made previously in the bowl of liquid chocolate until the it is completely covered in chocolate.
Step 10: Place the chocolate covered ball back on the baking sheet.
Step 11: Sprinkle crushed peppermint and the crushed Oreo you set aside earlier on top of the truffle before the chocolate hardens.
Repeat steps 9-11 until you have covered all of your balls in liquid chocolate, peppermint, and crushed Oreo.
Step 12: Place the sheet/pan of finished truffles into the refrigerator for at least an hour….I would recommend leaving it in overnight for prime results.

There are many variations of this that I want to experiment with (like using different flavor cream cheeses, adding different fruit fillings, and different types of Oreos) but this is the most basic and easy method that was fool proof even for a beginner like me. So I hope this has provided useful for all you chocolate lovers out there. Enjoy!
